or a superficial happiness that the writers think I want from Fitz and Olivia.
I, above all, want them to get their shit together individually. I want Fitz to get a divorce. I want Olivia to focus on herself and OPA. I would actually prefer Olivia being real with Fitz that she doesn’t want to be…
This is kinda how I thought the story would go. Fitz would eventually get a divorce and they would kinda date. Who really wants to see Liv as first lady anyway? I would loveto see her continue to be in her fixer mode running OPA and at the same time try to navigate her relationship with Fitz as a single man. Just bc Fitz divorced, doesn’t mean they have to get married immediately. They’ve never traditionally dated. It would be nice to see them try some semblance if that while he is in the Presidential bubble/ivory tower.
Yep. That would be interesting. It would be interesting for OPA too because a lot of the characters should wonder where her loyalties lie when it comes between a case and the president. We should have really had those conversations with OPA when they found out she was with the president.
I’ve been saying for the longest time that Liv as “First Girlfriend” would be so awesome and would open up a WEALTH of potential story lines — first and foremost, conflict of interests between presidency and OPA. For example, imagine if the Jenny Nystrom case took place during a time when Olivia and Fitz were OPENLY dating? OMG the fodder! And then think about the media and how they would chose sides and question ethics and whether certain “fixing” occured, occurs or will occur because of their personal relationship?
And yes, many of the fundamental questions should have been brought up in relationship to OPA already.
Ugh. Scandal is pretty much a show that epitomizes wasted opportunity. And it’s sad.
Not only that but just dealing with the fact that Fitz is a single man for the first time in twenty years and with Olivia’s insecurities I could see that causing conflicts because why would he want to settle down immediately with her and enter into another marriage. Let’s not even get into Cyrus and how he would be invested in controlling how Olivia looked and behave because the press is interested in her. Not only as the first girlfriend but as a person.
Fitz getting a divorce and being single effects both Olivia’s personal and professional life.
And with Cyrus, besides from controlling Olivia due to the first time a President dates in combination with her “hue”, you know there would be a tug of war because Cyrus would know that Olivia — especially Olivia who would have REAL run of the White House, would even further have Fitz’s ear. What would he do then? Hell, at one point he asked Mellie if she wanted him to get rid of Liv…would he go farther this time?
In addition to Olivia’s insecurities about Fitz jumping into another rship, I bet Fitz would have insecurities about whether Olivia would leave because she’s already done it many times (there’s a fic about this that explores both of these insecurities, but it hasn’t been updated in a while).
There’s just so much to tap here from their relationship itself, to the conflicts of interests, to how Olivia juggles a relationship, those conflicts, and running a business, how the world sees all of this, what type of conversation about race will this spark, etc etc etc. SO FUCKING MUCH! AND IT’S BEING SQUANDERED ON FOOLERY AND FUCKERY.
And none of these scenarios are in the slightest fairy tale. There is nothing quite not fairytale then dealing with the ramification of your relationship in a character based way that deals with all of the characters. Olivia, as the first girlfriend, would be someone who has a target on her back not only from political enemies but enemies who want to bring down the president. How does Olivia deal with that? How does she protect her team? How does she protect Fitz? Hell, you can even throw in a couple of organic break ups in there if you want. lol
Conflict is available to Olitz just because of their natural dispositions, their career, Mellie still being a factor because of the kids and because of Andrew.
